Indirect Leadership – Book Circle Online
BOOK CIRCLE OVERVIEW
You will read the book Indirect Leadership with Carl Starendal and other participants over a period of 10 weeks. Together, we will explore the research-based model of Indirect Leadership developed by the Swedish Defence University and gain practical tips and advice on how to apply the book’s insights in your daily work as a leader or manager.
To deepen our understanding of the concepts in the book, we will also engage with materials from MIT and Peter Senge about learning organizations and systems thinking.
Given Carl’s international recognition as an expert on modern working methods & management, the book circle will also focus on how we can effectively act as indirect leaders for teams, trains, value streams, and organizations that use these approaches.
Every other week, you will read a section of the book, meet with the group to discuss the content, and collectively reflect on the insights, their implications, and how they can be applied in daily work.
Please note that this book circle will be conducted in Swedish.
FACILITATED BOOK CIRCLE FORMAT
- The book circle is held online in Swedish with 6–12 participants.
- It consists of 5 sessions, every other week via video conference in the Discord application, from 14:00–15:30 Swedish time.
- Each session includes a lecture part from Carl, related to the content, followed by an open discussion with questions from the participants and a review of what we are reading for the next meeting, as well as the reflection task for the coming week, which is done offline at one’s own pace.
- During and after the book circle, you have access to a common group chat in the Discord application, where we share additional articles, ideas, and reflections from the material, and where you can also reach the other participants and Carl Starendal during and after the book circle if you have questions or want to discuss something.
- You need to order the book yourself, which costs 400 SEK online so that you have time to read the first part before the first meeting. You will receive instructions on how to do this when you sign up.

BOOK: INDIRECT LEADERSHIP
Indirect Leadership – The ‘soft’ sides of higher leadership”
When the effects we seek in leadership are several steps, links, or levels away from where we have direct influence, and we must “lead from a distance and through others.” then we can talk about the leadership being performed as Indirect.
Well-executed Indirect Leadership has much in common with the powerful and direct Transformational Leadership researched in the Leadership model from the Swedish Defence University, but here the primary paths to outreach are action-oriented through links, image-oriented in how we are perceived at a distance, and by creating conditions for trust in the organization.
The forms and challenges of leadership vary depending on the organizational level one is at. Indirect Leadership—IL—differs in several ways from direct leadership. Besides the physical distance to employees, it also involves managing various parallel time scales such as rapid decisions and strategic long-term decision-making, and balancing directives from above as well as demands and expectations from below.
